What is it?

Bisphenol A

Everyone has experienced that sweltering summer sun in Greece, surviving solely on watermelon and bottled water. However, you might want to think twice buying and drinking bottled water when you find out which chemical is found in most plastics.

BPA is an industrial chemical that is found in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins.

Polycarbonate plastics are often used in containers that store food and beverages, such as water bottles.

Epoxy resins are used to coat the inside of metal products, such as food cans, bottle tops and water supply lines.

How can BPA affect us?

Research has shown that BPA can seep into the food or beverage from the container it is made of. Certain health effects have been linked to BPA. Effects have been detected in the human brain, in behaviour, fetuses, infants and children. It is also BPA consumption can be linked to and increase in blood pressure. According to the NHS website, some scientists think that if it interferes with sex hormones, which could affect puberty, the menopause or cause cancers that are related to hormones. Those calling for a ban suggest that it may be a factor in a rising numbers of human illnesses, such as breast cancer, heart disease and genital birth defects.
